The Storm

Sending a huge thank you to my dear friend Saskia for introducing me to this brilliant quote.

She literally mailed me a box full of quotes and other goodies from London, England. This quote hit home.

Poetry by Bryant McGill, voice by Darius Bashar.

Love,

D

Here’s the full quote…

“The storm is out there and every one of us must eventually face the storm. When the storm comes, pray that it will shake you to your roots and break you wide-open. Being broken open by the storm is your only hope. When you are broken open, you get to discover for the first time what is inside you. Some people never get to see what is inside them; what beauty, what strength, what truth and love. They were never broken open by the storm. So, don't run from your pain — run into your pain. Let life's storm shatter you.”

This Philosophy Changed My Life

The last two years have been the best two years of my life.

I know that sounds kind of crazy, considering we are in a global pandemic and there is so much uncertainty and fear in the world. Just like so many of us, loads of incredibly challenging things have happened in my life in the past two years. It’s been a roller coaster ride with some really gnarly lows.

And still, somehow…

These past two years have given me more joy, ecstasy and fulfillment than ever before.

My secret weapon has been exactly what Warhol is alluding to in this quote.

When I stopped depending on big, grandiose events to feel alive, it was like I found new eyes and ears and started to experience life like a six year old again. Everything was new again and my curiosity exploded.

Suddenly, everywhere and everyone was art.

I am an imposter... and so are you!

This was one of many mic drop moments last night during the Archangel Zoom chat with the legendary Seth Godin.

Do you agree with Seth? He says that the reason imposter syndrome is so common is because we are all actually imposters, especially those of us that are leading something.

(That means all great visionary art and artists are imposters too.)

It feels good to own that I am an imposter.

Thank you Seth and thank you Gio.

One Thing I Wish I Knew When I First Starting Making Art...

Be gentle with your art.

And don’t forget to be kind and supportive to your artist self.

Because not everything is about money and fame.

It’s okay to keep your day job and make your art on the side.

It’s also okay to want to make a lot of money doing your art.

Just remember, for most of us our inner artist is very young. Usually between the ages of 5 and 15.

Before you place heavy expectations on yourself about earning a living with your art, let your inner artist play and create from a place of joy and exploration.

While your inner artist deepens your connection to your craft and becomes a skilled artist, it’s still your job as the adult to make sure the bills are paid and that there is food on the table.

Not all art needs to make money, but all artists do.

Love,

D

Here's One Way To Make More Art

Last week was challenging for a variety of reasons.

And some unexpected things came up that threw me out of my morning rituals.

→ Not doing my morning rituals made EVERYTHING in life more difficult.

But today I feel renewed.

Because today I got back to my FULL morning ritual and I feel a deep sense of groundedness and FLOW.

For me, my morning rituals are the best way I know to get me into that “wonderful state” that Robert Henri is talking about.

Do you have a practice that puts you in that state? Comment below or shoot me a DM, I’d love to hear your methods.

"How much art is hiding inside of us?
Waiting for compassion to set it free.
Begging for permission to be messy and honest.
Compassion starts with just one breath."

— Stephie Major

Thank you Stephie for sharing your art and your heart with the world.

I feel blessed to have you in my life.
